Skjálfti, one of Iceland’s largest e-sports competitions, took place last weekend in a sports hall in the town of Kópavogur. By most accounts, the event was a success—except for one serious incident that has since drawn widespread attention.
During the competition, 30-year-old Eyþór Atli Geirdal, who plays under the name “waNker,” physically attacked a 17-year-old competitor following a match. The altercation was caught on camera and later surfaced on Twitch, sparking outrage among viewers and attendees.
“This is an exceptionally unfortunate incident. The case is being investigated,” said Jökull Jóhannsson, one of the event’s organizers. He declined to provide further comment.
Screenshots from the game have also circulated online, showing Eyþór directing racist insults at the teenager, calling him “disgusting immigrant trash,” and saying he'd be willing to “beat children up.”
